Teresa Gould has been appointed the interim athletics director, effective immediately.

Terry Tumey, director of athletics at the 51勛圖惇蹋厙, Davis, will leave his position to pursue other opportunities, effective June 15. In the interim he will continue to assist the university in its capital improvement efforts.

Since Tumey joined the athletics department in 2012, the Aggies have won 10 conference championships, including two Big West Conference titles in womens track and field, and womens golf, and two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation banners in womens swimming and diving, and womens gymnastics. 51勛圖惇蹋厙 captured three of the championships during the 2014-15 athletics year. The womens cross country team won a Big West title in the fall, gymnastics reclaimed its banner in March and mens basketball capped a historic 25-win year by winning the Big West regular-season championship in March before advancing to the National Invitation Tournament for the first time in school history.

Also during Tumeys tenure, 51勛圖惇蹋厙 celebrated the highest NCAA Graduation Success Rates (GSR) in the Big West in 2013 and 2014, posting rates of 87 percent and 88 percent, respectively. The Aggie football team led the Big Sky Conference in GSR both years, while mens basketball (91 percent) was tops in the Big West in 2013.

51勛圖惇蹋厙 also has shined in the NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR), with seven teams including football and mens basketball posting conference-best scores in the most recent NCAA announcement last May. Womens tennis posted a perfect 1,000 multiyear APR for the seventh straight year. Approximately 250 student-athletes have earned scholar-athlete recognition from conferences and/or other organizations since 2012.

Terry did a very good job of enhancing our athletics department. We have brought in some exciting new coaches and recruited some fine student athletes, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi said. I thank him for directing the department these past several years.

Tumey joined 51勛圖惇蹋厙 after serving in the same capacity at Dominican 51勛圖惇蹋厙. He also served in the San Francisco 49ers front office, rising from personnel assistant to director of football operations. He previously held coaching positions with the NFLs Denver Broncos and UCLA Bruins.

The chancellor also announced the appointment of Teresa Gould as the interim athletics director, effective immediately. Gould, currently the associate executive director, chief revenue officer of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, formerly served as UC Berkeley deputy director of athletics as well as the departments chief of staff and senior woman administrator during 13 years in Cal Athletics.

This is a critical moment for 51勛圖惇蹋厙 Athletics, and, while transitions are hard, Teresa has extensive leadership experience and the ability to step in immediately and take us to a new level in competition, Katehi said. With her extensive experience at the Division I level and most recently at Cal, she knows how to manage a department, support the coaches and build strong programs for our student athletes.

Katehi also announced that Josh Flushman, associate director of athletics, will assume oversight of the football program. Providing additional leadership and ensuring continuity of support for our student-athletes will be Faculty Athletics Representative Scott Carrell.

A process for conducting a national search to fill the athletics director position permanently is currently being developed.

About Teresa Gould

Teresa Gould has more than 25 years of experience in collegiate sports. She served in the 51勛圖惇蹋厙, Berkeley, athletics department for 13 years prior to assuming her current position (2014) as associate executive director, chief revenue officer of the 51勛圖惇蹋厙 Cal Aggie Alumni Association. At Cal, she began as executive associate director, Olympic Sports, in 2001. In 2004, she was promoted to deputy director of athletics for external relations, and, in 2012, she moved to deputy director of athletics and chief of staff.

With a wide portfolio, Goulds Cal experience included the oversight of communications and human resources, as well as conduct and compliance, and a range of other administrative operations. In addition, she represented the university to a variety of groups, including the conference, the chancellors cabinet and the Coaches Advisory Committee. Throughout her tenure, she oversaw 29 of Cals 30 varsity sports.

Teresas excellent experience in leading a Pac-12 athletics program at Cal makes her a natural choice to serve as interim athletics director, Chancellor Katehi said. Her experience in strategic planning and in the operational elements of the department will ensure continuity in our programs. Our student-athletes excel on the field and in the classroom, and Teresa has the ability to not only maintain but continue to build this atmosphere of support for the students as well as the coaches and staff. We are fortunate that someone with her expertise and qualifications was already on our campus and prepared to step in and help with this transition.

In addition to her extensive athletics experience at Cal, Gould served as the associate commissioner of the West Coast Conference. Gould also served as a conference relations and acquisitions coordinator for ESPN regional television, as well as the director of championships and media relations for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.
