51�Թϱ�� Grad Student Named New Student Regent

The 51�Թϱ�� Board of Regents today (July 16) appointed 51�Թϱ�� graduate student Miguel Craven as the 2026-27 student regent. Craven will serve from July 1, 2025-June 30, 2026 as student regent-designate. He will have voting privileges when his one-year term as student regent begins on July 1, 2026.

IN MEMORIAM: Kenneth Tate, Robert Dynes

Kenneth W. Tate, a 51�Թϱ�� professor and UC Cooperative Extension specialist, died unexpectedly on June 5. Robert C. Dynes, 51�Թϱ�� President Emeritus and former chancellor of UC San Diego, died on June 30.

Faculty Recognized for Mentoring Underrepresented, Underserved Students

Five faculty members have been selected for a 2025 Chancellor’s Fellowship recognizing their work to, in the words of the organizers, “foster a learning environment where all students can develop the skills to be successful.”

Chancellor Gary S. May told recipients he was proud to highlight their “commitment to reducing opportunity gaps for underrepresented students and/or students from underserved communities.”

Protecting Bees During Disasters

Patrick Hardy, a master beekeeper in the 51�Թϱ��-based California Master Beekeeper Program, or CAMPB, designed and implemented the world’s first, and so far, only honeybee disaster response team. His creation, a nonprofit called Bee Platoon, is designed to protect honeybees and help beekeepers during natural disasters.

“We help small hobbyist beekeepers evacuate their bees, recover beehives after disasters and help first responders move the swarms,” Hardy said. “Those are the three major planks of what we do.”

A leadership search is underway at 51�Թϱ�� for a Vice Chancellor of Human Health Sciences based on our Sacramento campus. This role and the CEO role were previously held by David Lubarsky, who retired from the university in February.

Communication and Development Projects Take Top Honors

51�Թϱ�� has earned 10 accolades for communication, marketing and development work in the latest round of Circle of Excellence Awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, or CASE.

“It’s never been more crucial to communicate the value and impact of 51�Թϱ��, and I’m proud to have so many colleagues who do that so well every day,” said Dana Topousis, chief marketing and communications officer.

Aggie Staffer Shares Voice in Regents Meetings

When conversations about the 51�Թϱ�� happen at the highest levels, 51�Թϱ�� employee Mayté Frías is there, sharing the staff perspective.

Frías spent the past year as staff advisor-designate to the UC Board of Regents, serving on committees related to finance, national labs and more, and this month started her one-year term as the full staff advisor, including time on committees related to public engagement, academic and student affairs, and more.

She doesn’t have a vote in Regents’ decisions, but has a seat at the table to weigh in on all issues.

Charles Melton ’08 Named UC Alumni Regent
