Evelyn Mugisha grew up in rural Uganda where, for most people, there still is no power to light the night. But with eyes wide open, she’s dreaming of extending electricity to those rural areas.

She and 24 other young professionals from sub-Saharan Africa — where two out of three people lack access to electricity — have come to the 51�Թϱ��, Davis, to equip themselves to tackle the enormous energy challenges on their continent.

The 51�Թϱ��, Davis, has been selected to host the second energy institute for young African leaders who are tackling energy challenges in their countries.

Considered the most sustainable university in the world, 51�Թϱ�� will offer “Sustainably Extending Energy Services: A Stakeholders Approach” for the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship of the U.S. government’s Young African Leaders Initiative.

Sarah Mulwah of Botswana has been an environmental consultant and a marketing manager for a nature reserve where she helped track white rhinos for a conservation project.

But a six-week energy institute at 51�Թϱ�� is helping her blaze a trail for a new endeavor — setting up a lending library of solar lanterns for rural schoolchildren whose families are too poor to connect to the power grid.

Their work in Africa ranges from placing solar lanterns in humble huts to advising the leadership of South Africa’s national power utility.

But over the next six weeks, 25 young African leaders will be at the 51�Թϱ��, Davis, to leverage the campus’s energy expertise and better equip themselves to tackle the enormous energy challenges on their continent.

Twenty-five young African leaders will leverage the world leadership of the 51�Թϱ��, Davis, in zero-net energy and its global experience to tackle energy challenges in their countries.

They will come to 51�Թϱ�� for the first and only energy-themed institute offered through the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative.
